The Los Angeles County Jail was constructed in two phases. Phase one,
a 585,150 square foot structure was constructed in 1963, and was designed
to house 3,322 inmates at a cost of 17 million dollars. Phase two,
completed in 1976, added 350,000 square feet at a cost of 35 million
dollars. This addition raised the jail capacity to 5, 118 inmates.
Further interior design changes have increased the capacity of Men's
Central Jail to 6,800.
Men's Central Jail currently houses
the majority of Los Angeles County's high risk,
high security inmates, and it ranks as the largest
jail in the free world. the average annual operational
budget is 52 million dollars, with an annual inmate
food budget of 6 million dollars, and an annual
inmate medical maintence cost of approximately
94 million dollars. The average housing cost per
inmate is $53.45 per day
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Los
Angeles Countyl Jail is committed to providing
the public with a safe, secure and pleasant environment
where
inmate visits are conducted in compliance with
applicable laws and facility policies. Please call
the Inmate Information Center at (213) 473-6100
prior to your arrival at Los Angeles County Jail
to determine if the inmate you intend to visit
is
allowed a visit and if there are any special restrictions
on their visiting privilege. Generally if an inmate
is attending court on any given day they will not
be allowed a visit for that day.
